What is Educational Therapy?

Educational Therapy is a therapeutic approach used to help individuals who have learning differences or disabilities improve skills needed to be successful in school or any given profession.

It is an individualized form of learning remediation that uses a wide range of methods in teaching and learning, psychology, and ethics. This form of therapy offers the best possible solution for an individual’s unique learning and metacognitive needs.

How long does it take for Educational Therapy to work?

There is no scientific formula regarding the length of time a client needs to achieve the goals of Educational Therapy. This depends on the client’s individual needs.

While working with an Educational Therapist, you will complete an intake session in which the therapist carefully goes through your history, listens to the issues you are experiencing, analyzes any pertinent evaluations (such as a psychoeducational evaluation), and then creates a customized plan.

The plan is devised to remediate learning issues, and long-term and short-term goals will be created.

Often, as these goals are successfully achieved, new, deeper learning issues may be discovered. If this is the case, an Educational Therapist will fine-tune or reassess goals with the client.

The work of Educational Therapy is finished when a client is “ready”; that is, when he or she feels confident in the ability to succeed and advocate independently.

We can’t promise to deliver change in a set time frame. After all, it is you doing the work under our guidance. We’ll decide mutually when you have reached your goal. This can take anywhere from several months to several years.

Often, after completing Educational Therapy, clients may return for “tune-ups” or “check-ins” as needed or if new issues arise.

Who might need Educational Therapy?

Educational Therapy is an option for any individual who feels that learning differences or organizational issues are hindering his or her ability to succeed in the tasks of daily life.

For students, these issues may be centered around academic demands.

For working professionals, these demands may include difficulties reading work materials, possible late diagnoses of reading disabilities (such as dyslexia), or organizational and executive functioning deficits that prevent a person from performing at his or her optimal capability.

While Educational Therapy is an option for learners of all ages, EdTherapy NYC specializes in therapeutic remediation of adults in college, graduate or professional programs, and professionals who may not be performing well in their jobs.

If we feel that our expertise is a match for the issues presented, we will review and accept high-school learners on a case-by-case basis.

Do I need to have a psychoeducational evaluation to begin Educational Therapy?

While you do not need to have a psychoeducational evaluation to be eligible to begin Educational Therapy, it is certainly helpful if you do have one.

If you are currently in a college or graduate/ professional program, a psychoeducational evaluation can be key for obtaining services through student support centers at colleges and universities.

If you are an adult who has not been diagnosed with any learning disabilities but suspect you may have a learning or reading disability, we at EdTherapy NYC can help steer you in the right direction so that you can begin the evaluation process.

We can use hard and soft data, like your school or work records, screenings for reading, work samples, and the like to get a sense of where to begin.

If you are currently in a college or graduate/ professional program, a psychoeducational evaluation can be key in obtaining services through student support centers at colleges and universities.

As Educational Therapists, we are highly trained to use the results of hard and soft evaluations to understand the nuanced needs of individuals with learning issues. These data (qualitative or quantitative) provide us with immense help, thus ensuring that your Educational Therapy services will be of the highest quality.

What if I don’t have a diagnosed learning disability?

If you do not have a diagnosed learning disability, you still may be a good candidate for Educational Therapy. Educational Therapy is not a service exclusive to individuals with diagnosed learning disabilities.

If you suspect that you have a learning disability that has not been diagnosed, we can help you with the evaluation process, as we simultaneously work on customized goals and plans to remediate and ameliorate the issues you are experiencing.

Not all issues that get in the way of a person’s success are black-or-white diagnosed disabilities. At EdTherapy NYC, we consider each client’s unique needs, learning styles, and areas of strength and weakness to provide goals and teach skills that will help our clients achieve them.

How do I start the process of Educational Therapy?

Everything begins with a free 20-minute phone consultation.

If you feel that you may be a candidate for our Educational Therapy services, you will first need to schedule your phone consultation. During this consultation, we will talk about your needs and the issues you are experiencing, and then decide if EdTherapy NYC can help you achieve your goals.

What happens after a consultation?

If during the initial consultation we mutually agree that we are a good match, we will then proceed to schedule an intake session.

During this session, we will discuss in detail your needs and the scope of work and analyze relevant data (such as a psychoeducational evaluation, writing samples, medical information, etc.). This session may take between 1.5 and 2 hours.

The intake session is essential in that it provides the foundation for Educational Therapy services. At the end of the session, scheduling and suggested frequency of sessions will be suggested.

Then, Educational Therapy begins.

What are the fees of Educational Therapy at EdTherapy NYC?

As Educational Therapy is intensive, custom work, fees and pricing depend on the scope of work. General pricing is discussed during the consultation and intake session.

Do I need to inform my school or employer that I am undergoing Educational Therapy sessions?

While you are not obligated or mandated to inform your school or employer that you have begun Educational Therapy, we highly recommend that this information is shared.

At the core of the Educational Therapy philosophy is the treatment alliance, which means that an honest sharing of information between the client’s interested parties (i.e., family unit, school, workplace, other doctors such as psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, etc.) is crucial to ensure the client’s successful growth and achievement of goals.

Do you accept insurance?

While we do not accept insurance, you may be able to submit Educational Therapy sessions to your insurance company for reimbursement. The appropriate code for Educational Therapy is CPT97217.

Please note that while we are excited by this new code for cognitive remediation, it has not worked for everyone. Consult with your insurance company.

How often do sessions take place?

In order to be effective, sessions occur no less than once per week. Sessions run for 55 minutes.

How is Educational Therapy different from “regular” therapy?

Educational Therapy is quite unlike other, more traditional types of therapy and is not intended to replace any other forms of counseling or psychotherapy that a client may currently be undergoing.

Educational Therapy is therapeutic remediation of learning, metacognitive, and executive function issues or deficits that hinder an individual from reaching his or her full potential.

While we do have extensive training and backgrounds in psychology and habit formation, we also adhere to a strong code of ethics that precludes us from doing the work of a therapist or psychotherapist.

If you feel that you need these services in conjunction with Educational Therapy sessions, we will be happy to provide references of top specialists in the field who can help you through different forms of therapy.
