What are non-verbal learning disabilities?

You may have been recently diagnosed with non-verbal learning disabilities or been told you are somewhere on the autism spectrum. Perhaps this is news; perhaps you suspected it. You may know about your issue, but you don’t know what to do about it.

For those who don’t know what non-verbal learning disabilities are, this is a kind of cognitive profile in which your verbal IQ scores and other measures of verbal cognition are high, but your tests of visual-perceptual skills are low.

You may or may not have difficulty with math. When you try to organize your calendar or work, you probably have difficulty seeing the big picture. You may not be able to “see” how a project or paper should be organized. It is hard to shift from details to seeing the big picture and to make inferences from those details.

Have you ever been told you can’t see the forest for the trees?

You may now have a clue as to what makes you different from most people. It’s called neuro-atypicality, the state of having a different set of cognitive strengths and vulnerabilities than most people.

You may have trouble getting jokes or understanding the subtext of a play or novel. You may have trouble knowing how to converse in a group and keep up with the rhythm of the conversation. Your jokes may be unusual.

This doesn’t mean that you don’t love, have friends, make deep connections with others, or that you can’t be highly successful in your job. But it does mean you may have been misunderstood for most of your life, and you may be anxious or lacking in self-confidence.

What you can do about issues with non-verbal learning disabilities.

Many people with your profile succeed in computer programming, finance, engineering, and other fields that rely on looking at old problems in new ways. You may have read about autism through the wonderful books by Dr. Temple Grandin, perhaps the most famous autistic activist in the country.

You’d like to be more successful in school or work than you have been. You want to be better at handling your schedule or at writing and speaking to groups of people.

Educational Therapy can help you learn about yourself and about how your mind works. We can help you become better at handling space/time/materials/people.

We can show you how to respect and cherish your special gifts. And we can help you become more successful at interpreting your role at school or work and in producing work on demand.

We use a time diary, a good planner, and a lot of questions and answers to help you begin noticing how you spend your time. You learn how to handle your responsibilities and demands and to develop confidence in your skills.

Using words and visualizations…

You are helped to picture the things you need to do visually and in words. Also, we will help you understand your profile so that you feel less anxious and can explain your differences to others.

You will learn to write more fulfilling work that makes others understand you better – and that is not just a focus on facts or details. We can show you how to shift between the details and the big picture while writing or studying.

Most of all, you will be helped to become more successful according to your personal goals for your work life, and this will make you feel better about the wonderful mind that is yours.
